The southern and smaller two of the Big Island's volcanoes, Mauna Loa and Kilauea jointly constitute, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, thirty miles from Hilo and eighty miles from Kona.
It's possibly one of the most dramatic of the USA's National Parks; as well as the two active volcanoes, of which at least one is likely to be erupting, it includes desert, tundra arctic tundra and the Wao Kele O Puna rainforest. No map here can keep up with the latest whims of the lava flows and no towns or resorts exist on the south coast of the Big Island due the constant volcano activity. There is one lodge in the park, but it is very basic.
