Walking around the neighbourhoods is a great way to get to know Atlanta. Buckhead, the Beverly Hills of the South, is full of grand houses and upmarket shops. Nightlife is centred around several districts and boasts over 8,000 restaurants.
Outside the city, one of the area's biggest attractions is Stone Mountain Park. The 825ft granite outcrop depicts the Confederate heroes and is larger than Mt Rushmore. Visit the Georgia Hall of Fame in Macon, where more than 450 Georgian musicians are honoured including Ray Charles, Gladys Knight, Otis Redding, Little Richard, Travis Tritt and R.E.M.
Or if you are a big Gone With The Wind fan head off to Clayton County South of Atlanta and visit Jonesboro, a not-to-be-missed town for movie lovers and those wanting a true feel of the Deep South.
