Located on West Avenue āGā in the city of Lancaster (an hour north of Los Angeles), the Civic Musical Road is THE only one of its kind in the USA and one of four in the world....so, just what is it?
In early August 2008, this quiet desert community got an odd request from Honda Motor Company. The car maker wanted to cut a series of pattern grooves into a stretch of road. Why? So, people driving down the road, at certain speeds, would create the theme from "The Lone Ranger" - The William Tell Overture. The footage of Honda Civics "playing" the famous tune was to be used in a national advertising campaign.
Eager to attract tourists to the area, Lancaster gave the project the green light. However, the popularity of the original road soon created major traffic problems and locals were up in arms. To keep the peace, but also continue to promote the USA's only road of this kind, the musical street was moved further out of town to Avenue G. Today, both visitors and residents move along in harmony (no pun intended!).
